In the summer of 2006, 9300 Durant Road was an oil-saturated, nut-and-bolt-infested lawn mower repair joint. After days of slapping up paint, degreasing floors, emptying out a myriad of storage units, basements and garages, SuzAnna’s Antiques was born.
Walking into the shop is like stepping back in time. “I feel like I’m in my Grandmother’s house” can be overheard from customers of all ages. With stacks of hand-made quilts, shelves of colorful Pyrex and enamel wash pans, and vintage aprons in every size, you feel as though your Grandmother will bustle in at any minute with cornbread hot out of a cast iron skillet.
Linens, hats, furs, vintage jewelry and little girls’ tutus fill the shelves and armoires throughout the shop. Tables with peeling paint and scuffed wood are adorned with planters from the 40’s and 50’s. There is sure to be one for every collector from monkeys and elves to swans and the Virgin Mary.
Outside, you will find a variety of items: baskets, tea pots, enamel buckets, cut tires, a cauldron, old strainers all waiting to be filled with herbs, lettuces, ivy, pansies, decorative grasses, and chrysanthemums. Metal gliders, wood benches, and white wrought iron furniture are just a few of the functional porch furnishings you might find. Chicken feeders, nesting boxes and water buckets are all part of the décor, and would be the perfect addition to a bedroom or a garden.
Initially, SuzAnna’s was housed in one section of the two-garage building. However, in August of 2006, the other half of the building was acquired. This allowed space for two dealers and a storage room made from colorful old wood doors.
Displays change weekly, or daily if sales are heavy. With their trucks gassed up, Susie and Anna, are always ready to speed shop at yard sales, cruise through thrift stores, or spend an evening at an auction. They have been known to make purchases from the backs of friends’ trucks, too. If you can’t find what you are looking for in the store, let the owners know. They keep a list of wishes and love calling customers to report findings of milk glass cake plates, old roller skates with a key, or a particular Watts Pottery pitcher.
Susie and Anna met at Gresham Lake Antique Mall, on the corners of Gresham Lake Road, Capitol Boulevard, and the 540 beltline where both women had booths. They kept running into each other at auctions and always wanted to bid on the same items. Susie was managing the Red Barn in Youngsvilleand Anna was a stay-at-home Mom. As a joke, one of the girls threw out the idea of opening an antique store together.
Before long, the joke seemed like a good idea and they were on their way. Being partners made auctions much easier because they were no longer bidding against each other for the same treasures. Anna has since left the business in January of 2009, to spend more time with her family and Susie’s daughter Jenny has tried to fill Anna’s shoes as her mom’s new business partner.
Located on Durant Road between Capital Boulevard and Falls of the Neuse, the shop is between the fire department and the railroad tracks in the back of Neuse Station, home of NC Communications.
